‘Third time lucky’ is a good luck charm
If you’re a newbie to WordPress, the phrase “Third time lucky” may be a good luck charm for
you. This popular saying alludes to a case in English law involving a West Country sailor
named John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Lee had been convicted of the murder of Emma Keyse in 1885
and was sentenced to hang, but the Home Secretary at the time, Sir William Harcourt,
commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. Lee was later freed, and his life sentence was
reduced to a minimum of one year.
The phrase “third time lucky” is also used in western culture, referring to the fact that the third
time is the charm in many cases. For example, Barcelona has lost two finals, so they are
hoping for the third time to be lucky. But it can be more than that: the phrase is
often used in
sports. If a team loses twice in a row, it will try harder the third time around.
